The mental health services in Balochistan are limited to specialist services and are unevenly distributed, being primarily located in Quetta, the capital city. Outside Quetta, there are only four districts where a psychiatrist is available, leaving 31 districts without any specialist service due to a lack of specialist positions, limited incentives and security concerns. Most of the patients from these districts either travel long distances and bear out-of-pocket expenses or have no access to care.

The MoPD&SI set up the MHSP&C Unit this year to establish an institutional framework and launch mental health as a national priority. Aligned with its ToRs, the unit is supporting a national steering and coordination mechanism; offering technical expertise to the governmental (provincial and federal) & non-governmental entities; addressing gaps & identifying opportunities; and strengthening national and provincial mental health systems.

Hamdard Force is a community mental health intervention specifically designed for Pakistan. The objectives of this intervention are to build the capacity of a community mental health workforce to provide basic psychosocial support, identify people with mental healthcare needs, and refer them to relevant services.

As part of implementing MHPSS pilot service in Baltistan, and with the support of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Pakistan, a total of 70 community mental health workers have been registered and 55 have completed online Hamdard Force course to promote accessibility, acceptability, and scalability of mental healthcare at the level of the community in two target districts – Skardu (31) and Ghanche (39).
